Atutahi Observatory

The Wairarapa's dark night sky was one of the attractions for us when we moved to Martinborough and the ultimate dream was to have our own observatory.  Five years in the planning our magnificent Atutahi Observatory was completed late in 2010.  Built on the highest point of our property it commands not only the night sky but provides an expansive vista all round the valley from the Tararua ranges in the west to the Canoes of Kupe in the east.

The 3 metre Observatory dome was constructed  from an Astrodomes metal kitset sourced from Brisbane, Australia, painstakingly assembled piece by piece by Peter.  Housed inside is a 250ml  diameter f/10 Meade Schmidt Cassegrain telescope on as Astro-Physics 900 GTO mount.

Peter's  current astronomical activities include membership of the Royal Astonomical Society of New Zealand Occulation Section,  the Wellington Astronomical Society, a Trustee of the Gifford Observatory Trust in Wellington and he was formerly a Board member of the Carter Observatory.
